A chase that started in Payette ended with a man being shot by police at the Fruitland exit of I-84 late Monday night.

Investigators say a Payette Police Department officer tried to pull over a vehicle in Payette, but the car took off headed south towards Fruitland.

Officers tell 6 On Your Side a Fruitland Police Department officer used a spike strip to slow the vehicle down but it continued to I-84 before stopping on the WB off ramp at mile marker three.

At some point after the vehicle stopped, police opened fire, hitting the man.  They then began providing emergency care.  He was taken to a Boise hospital, we have not been given any information on his condition or his identity.

Police have not said whether the man had a weapon or what exactly led to officers opening fire.  They have only said there was an altercation and at least one of the officers on scene opened fire.  A press release from the Payette County Sheriff's Office says the details of that altercation are not known at this time.

No officers were injured in the incident.
