Big rigs could roll on more Idaho roads
BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Big trucks could roll on more miles of Idaho roads including U.S. Highway 95, as proponents of the measure's economic development benefits overcame fears that this policy change could undermine safety, especially in northern Idaho.
After two hours of debate Friday, representatives voted 49-18 for the timber industry-backed measure seeking to expand where 129,000-pound rigs are allowed.
It's already passed the Senate.
Republican Rep. Kelley Packer of McCammon said she's convinced this bill ensures that local highway districts, cities and towns have adequate control over whether to allow the big rigs on their roads.
Big trucks are already allowed south of the Snake River.
GOP Rep. Cindy Agidius of Moscow decried this proposed expansion, however, arguing it's being forced on northern Idaho by shippers -- without respect to residents' wishes.
