Lawmakers unsure about tackling Medicaid in 2013
BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Expanding Medicaid could save Idaho taxpayers tens of millions, according to a state-financed report released this week, but lawmakers aren't sure if there's time or political will to tackle the issue during the 2013 session.
House Health and Welfare Committee Chairman Fred Wood of Burley said Friday he agrees Medicaid should be expanded, as foreseen under President Barack Obama's 2010 health care overhaul.
That's because Idaho state and county tax savings over the next decade could total about $85 million, if the low-income health insurance program is extended to more people, largely single adults.
But Wood says no decision has been made on whether to ask the Legislature to make the move.
Much hinges on Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter, who earlier this year said he wasn't in favor of expansion.
