House mulls limits to Tax Commission garnishments
BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Representatives are due to vote on limits to how much money the Idaho State Tax Commission can garnish from delinquent taxpayers' wages, a measure brought by lawmakers who think the agency is too aggressive.
The House Revenue and Taxation Committee voted unanimously Thursday to limit garnishments to 25 percent.
Currently, the agency can take everything.
In February, Senate members bashed the Tax Commission, charging it with draconian tactics.
Sen. Jim Rice, a Republican from Caldwell, says this measure is designed to put a stop to this.
Before Thursday's vote, Tax Commission policy manager Mike Chakarun told the House panel his agency could live with the new limits.
The agency had previously maintained it sought to use these garnishments only with recalcitrant tax dodgers.
Rice's bill has already cleared the Senate.
