School security bill could get amendments
BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- A bill requiring county sheriffs to work with school boards to develop plans to bolster school security faces potential changes in the full House.
The bill has already cleared the Senate, but it created some concerns in the House Education Committee Wednesday.
The measure allows for schools boards to consider arming teachers and bus drivers or installing metal detectors.
But committee members agreed the bill needs some tweaks and voted to send it to the House to debate amendments.
For example, lawmakers say they want language giving local police chiefs a more defined role in developing security plans. Idaho Falls Republican Rep. Linden Bateman said the bill needs to clearly include charter schools.
Lobbyists for The Idaho Press Club and Idaho Freedom Foundation urged changes related to public records exemptions.
