Highway 21 “avalanche alley” reopens
On Saturday Highway 21- also known as “avalanche alley,” has been reopened between Grandjean Junction and Banner Summit. The Idaho Transportation Department closed the highway due to an avalanche safety precaution making this closure the sixth during this avalanche season.
Last year there were 8 closures between November 1 and March 31 totaling 21.5 days. There was a total of 50 slides and more than 28 feet of snowfall.
“Avalanche alley” is home to about 60 avalanche chutes and 90 percent of avalanches that affect highways in the state of Idaho.
