Travis Smith, 40, of Boise, pleaded guilty Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Boise to unlawful possession of a firearm, U.S. Attorney Wendy Olson said.

According to courts documents, about seven years ago, Smith was convicted of aggravated battery in Ada County, and sentenced to ten years in prison. Two years ago, Smith was paroled and released from custody with the condition that he submit to a search of his home at any time by law enforcement.

Last year, a Probation and Parole officer conducted a search of Smith’s home and discovered a Mossberg 12 gauge shotgun and ammunition. Officials said Smith admitted the gun was his and that he had purchased it a month before. Smith is prohibited from possessing firearms due to his prior felony conviction.

The charge is punishable by up to ten years in prison, a maximum fine of $250,000, and at least three years of supervised release.

Sentencing is set for June 4 at the federal courthouse in Boise.
