Lincoln quote on Idaho Statehouse plaque disputed
BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- A new plaque adorns an auditorium in the Idaho Statehouse with a quote attributed to President Lincoln that reads: "There is both a power and a magic in public opinion. To that let us now appeal."
The plaque was put up in honor of the 150th anniversary of Idaho becoming a territory last week.
Some Lincoln historians say the quote may not be authentic. It's not in any verified transcripts of Lincoln's speeches.
Former Lt. Gov. David Leroy, who is an expert in Lincoln history, chose the quote, which comes from a disputed transcript of a Lincoln speech taken by Chicago attorney Henry Clay Whitney. Leroy says many Lincoln speech transcripts are suspect and this was the most compelling quote on public discourse he found.
