Baby with HIV virus cured
Scientists say that a 2 ½-year-old baby born with the HIV virus is now cured after receiving early treatment.
The child has been off HIV drugs for about 1 year with no signs of infection. If the child remains healthy it will be the world’s second reported cure.
The baby was born to a mother who did not receive prenatal care and did not know her HIV status. A test after birth showed she was infected. Doctors transferred the baby to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, more than 100 miles away from their rural home.
Specialists say this case offers promising clues for more research to fight pediatric HIV.
