Grant helps 47 schools plug into online class bank
BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- The J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation has agreed to invest $1.5 million into making Idaho the nation's first statewide pilot program for online classes provided by the Khan Academy.
For now, the goal is to make Khan Academy's courses available to 47 public and charter schools across the state -- from districts in big cities like Boise to rural communities like Murtaugh and Cottonwood.
Former hedge fund analyst Salman Khan launched his academy in 2008 to provide free classes to anyone, anywhere. The nonprofit provides free educational content globally in areas of math, finance, history and art.
Khan has partnered previously with more than 40 schools in California, but the Idaho experiment is the first statewide effort.
The Albertson Foundation grant will be used to train teachers and technology.
