Federal budget cuts likely to impact INL cleanup
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) -- The U.S. Secretary of Energy says looming federal budget cuts could curtail waste cleanup projects ongoing at an Idaho research facility and other sites across the country.
In a letter earlier sent to congressional lawmakers earlier this month, Energy Secretary Steven Chu outlined several scenarios for cleanup projects should the $85 billion in automatic cuts -- known as the sequester -- take effect March 1.
Chu says funding reductions would put numerous environmental compliance milestones at risk.
The ongoing cleanup at the Idaho National Laboratory could be among those impacted by the reductions.
The cleanup at the eastern Idaho lab is coordinated by CH2M-WG Idaho LLC. Company spokesman Eric Simpson says it's too early to speculate on fallout from the March 1 deadline.
