Members of the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence rallied on the steps of the Idaho Statehouse Thursday afternoon, as part of a national effort to end violence against women and girls.

The event, known as “One Billion Rising,” began as a call to action based on studies that say one in three women will be beaten or raped in their lifetime. Organizers say that number translates to more than one billion females who have been victims of such violence.

"Already in 2013, Idaho communities have tragically experienced four domestic violence-related homicides," said Kelly Miller, Executive Director of the Idaho Coalition. "One homicide, one woman being abused is one too many. Violence against women and girls is a human rights violation that must be stopped."

Event participants wore red and black to show the “visual power of their collective voice,” organizers said.
