Idaho Senate rejects Gov. Otter's Fish and Game appointee
BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Senators rejected a Buhl fitness center owner's appointment to the Idaho Fish and Game Commission, citing doubts about her hunting experience.
Monday's rejection of Joan Hurlock for the seven-member panel on a 19-16 vote was preceded by anger from some southern Idaho hunters who said she lacked experience necessary to help set Idaho wildlife policy.
Hurlock was appointed by Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter last June, but needed the Senate's blessing.
Republican Sen. Patti Anne Lodge of Huston argued Hurlock's commitment to encouraging children to cultivate appreciation for the outdoors would help preserve hunting and fishing for future Idaho generations.
Voting with the majority, GOP Sen. Jeff Siddoway of Terreton opposed Hurlock's appointment during the nearly two-hour debate, saying Hurlock's passion for children was obvious, just not her passion for hunting.
