Idaho House approves pregnancy center tax exemption
BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Nonprofit pregnancy resource centers that do not perform abortions could get a tax break under a bill approved in a House committee.
The Spokesman Review reports that the House Revenue and Taxation Committee signed off on legislation Wednesday that would define those centers as "health-related entities."
Sponsors say the exemption would cost the state less than $10,000 yearly in sales tax. McCammon Republican Rep. Kelly Packer said some pregnancy centers thought they were initially eligible for tax breaks and are now being asked to pay several years' worth back taxes.
The bill got push back from Boise Democrat Rep. Grant Burgoyne, who disagrees with changing the tax code on behalf of one specific nonprofit.
The bill will now be sent to the full House for debate.
