Sloth bear twins at Idaho Falls zoo growing up, doing well
The staff at the Tautphaus Park Zoo is reporting that the sloth bear cubs born on Nov. 29, 2012 appear to be doing very well.
"At their last check-up on December 20th, the male weighed 1698 grams or 3.7 pounds and the female weighed 1318 grams or 2.8 pounds," said Josh Palmer with the city of Idaho Falls.
“Their bellies are full, they are well hydrated and they are very vocal.” says Beth Rich, Zoo Superintendent. “At three weeks of age, they are hitting their first developmental milestone – their eyes are just starting to open.”
While the cubs are doing well, the Zoo is still cautious.
“We’ve restricted access to the bear building allowing only key personnel inside. We want to make sure mom and cubs have as little disturbance as possible so as not to put any undue stress on them.” Rich said. “We know everyone is anxious to see our new cubs. We appreciate everyone’s understanding about giving mom and cubs plenty of peace and quiet in these critical first weeks of life.”
