The Idaho Department of Correction has presented its Silver Cross Award to two North Idaho Correctional Institution officers for quickly coming to the aid of others in a time of crisis.

According to Jeffrey Ray with IDOC, on July 2, while transporting an inmate to the Adams County jail, Officer Larry Childers came upon a group of people standing near a burning van on Whitebird Hill. Officer Childers realized that if the van’s gas tank were to explode the people, who included children and senior citizens, would be hurt. Officer Childers ordered the group to stand back, grabbed a fire extinguisher and put out the blaze.

On Oct. 10, Officer Michael P. Kaschmitter spotted an inmate choking during breakfast inside NICI’s dining hall. Officer Kaschmitter successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver and likely saved the offender’s life.

“These officers are representative of the high caliber of correctional professionals who work at NICI and throughout the department,” said NICI Warden Lynn Guyer. “We are proud to be of service to the citizens of the State of Idaho.”

NICI is a 414-bed, men’s prison in Cottonwood. It primarily houses offenders who are enrolled in education and treatment programs and are considered viable candidates for probation rather than a longer period of incarceration.
