UW awards degree to student who died of cancer
SEATTLE (AP) -- The University of Washington awarded an engineering degree to a student who died of bone cancer in his senior year.
Nolan Roquet (roh-kay) had worked through surgeries and chemotherapy at such a high level that graduate schools at Stanford and MIT were ready to admit him.
He died in September at the age of 24, just a few credits shy of graduating.
The Seattle Times reports he was diagnosed in his freshman year with the same type of cancer that also afflicted Canadian runner Terry Fox who died in 1981.
Despite the disease, Roquet lived for much of his college career on campus.
After officials learned how close he had been to graduating, they awarded him the degree last month.
