The City of Boise is allowing Boise residents to put out extra trash for free in trash cans from Dec. 31 to Jan. 5.

"Please set out extra material on your regular trash day in 20-32 gallon trash cans," said Vince Tromboli with the Boise Dept. of Public Works. "Residents can also set out leaves and yard waste in compostable paper leaf bags. No overflow trash stickers are required. No plastic bags or boxes of trash will be collected. (Note: recycling is unlimited all year round. Place extra recyclables in 20-32 gallon container and leave next to blue cart.)"

Unicorporated Ada County, along with Garden City and Star are also collecting extra trash in 20-32 gallon containers from Dec. 31 to Jan. 5.

“We know from collection data and speaking to residents they have significantly more waste during the holiday season,” Public Works Solid Waste Manager Catherine Chertudi said. “While we always encourage residents to reuse and recycle as much as possible, this cleanup week allows residents to discard extra trash at no additional cost.”

The city will also allow Boise residents to recycle Christmas trees curbside on their regular trash day Jan. 7-11, 2013.

"Trees must be set away from regular trash carts and cans, 100% decoration free (no tinsel or any spray-on materials), remove stands and cut into four-foot lengths," said  Trees will be collected on the regular trash pick-up day.

Also this year, residents can put out compostable paper leaf bags with leaves and yard waste during the week of Christmas tree collection. Bundled branches cut less than four-feet and under 60-pounds will also be picked up.
