Residents of the Treasure Valley and Lewiston are invited to join Idaho State Parks for the second annual First Day Hikes event. This year, hikes will take place from 1 – 3 p.m. at Eagle Island State Park and Hells Gate State Park on New Year’s Day.

“We so pleased to be holding our second annual First Day Hikes event, and this year we are proud to announce that we have added a second location for Idahoans to get outdoors and in to our beautiful state parks,” said Idaho State Parks Director Nancy Merrill. “First Day Hikes are a wonderful way to invigorate the mind and body while burning off those extra holiday calories!” she added.

According to the department, two self-guided hikes are offered at each park, and are suitable for people of all ages and abilities and maps will be provided. Park staff at both Eagle Island and Hells Gate will be on hand to answer questions. The $5 motor vehicle entry fee will be in effect at both locations.

Dogs are welcome at both locations, but the department asks that you please keep them leashed.

“We hope that hiking along the trails and taking in all the sights and sounds of beautiful Eagle Island and Hells Gate State Parks will become part of an individual or family’s regular exercise routine all year-round,” said Merrill.
