30 malnourished and underweight dogs are safe Friday night, in protective custody at the Canyon County animal shelter.

On Thursday, Canyon County Sheriff's deputies got an anonymous tip and seized the animals from a Caldwell home where the dogs were living in what animal control officers describe as deplorable conditions.

"You have some dogs that are very, very malnourished and very emaciated," Sheriff-elect Kieran Donahue said. "Some have skeletal processes are showing dramatically."

When rescuing the dogs from the property, officers spotted a large marijuana growing operation. Late Friday afternoon, Caldwell's Jerry Krebs was charged with felony marijuana manufacturing and trafficking. 30 animal cruelty counts are pending.

"If you are going to have animals," Donahue said, "if you're in the management of animals, then you have a responsibility to care for those animals correctly, they don't get to say: 'I'm hungry, let's go to the cupboard and get something to eat.'"

According to animal control officers at least six dogs were at least 15 pounds underweight.

The dogs will remain at the animal shelter, under evaluation of a licensed veterinarian until further notice.
