Inmate in critical condition after Taser used
RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) -- A Kennewick, Wash., jail inmate who reportedly stopped breathing shortly after being shocked with a Taser remains hospitalized in critical condition.
The Tri-City Herald reports that Benton County sheriff's officers say 29-year-old Kevin Culp of Spokane was being treated during some kind of "medical episode" Monday at the county jail when he became combative. He reportedly struggled with officers and bit them and was zapped with a Taser. It initially seemed to have little effect but 15 minutes later he was found unresponsive.
Jail Commander Jon Law says Culp has two felony manslaughter convictions from Idaho and was under community supervision there. Culp was a Washington state Corrections Department contract inmate in the Benton County jail. Law says the state Corrections Department was doing a courtesy hold for Idaho. The Herald says it wasn't clear exactly why Culp was in custody.
