Treasure Valley woman's personal blog post in response to Connecticut school shootings goes viral
The valley's Liza Long says her 13-year-old son, Michael. is mentally ill. In response to Friday's Sandy Hook Elementary massacre in Newtown, Conn. Long wrote a blog post that's garnering national attention.
Long strongly believes the national dialouge in the wake of this latest tragedy should focus not on guns, but on mental illness.
Long titles her blog: "The Anarchist Soccer Mom." Just hours after the rampage Friday, Long opened up about her son Michael's mental instability and unpredictable behavior. She writes her son has threatened to kill her and then himself numerous times.
"I love my son," Long writes. "But he terrifies me." This mom goes on to say, "This problem is too big for me to handle on my own. I am sharing this story because I am Adam Lanza's mother. I am Dylan Klebold's and Eric Harris' mother...and these boys-and their mothers-need help. In the wake of another horrific national tragedy, it's easy to talk about guns. But ,it's time to talk about mental illness."
Long closes her post with a plea. "It's time for a meaningful, nationwide conversation about mental health. That's the only way our nation can ever truly heal."
The Huffington Post published Long's blog post Sunday morning. As of late Sunday night, the story received more than 6,000 comments.
