Nampa School District approves four furlough days, other cost-cutting measures
A big meeting was held Tuesday night for the Nampa School District. The budget committee starts to make its recommendations to the school board on how to combat the massive deficit.
The budget committee has brought forth a long list of solutions -- some long-term, some short-term -- to the Board of Trustees. The board didn't get to all of them last night, but they did approve fees for a pay-to-play card for sports, which is basically a transportation fee. They also approved an activity fee card, and the sale of some properties.
But the really contentious issue of the night was furlough days. Much of the audience was made up of teachers, who met the decision to approve four furlough days with a lot of hostility.
One teacher, Mandy Simpson, sits on the budget committee, so she's very familiar with the different options, including the furlough days. She spoke several times last night, and much of what she said was met with applause.
The discussions will be ongoing as more solutions get brought forward.
