Dad of 11-year-old armed robbery suspect arrested
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Police have arrested the father of the 11-year-old Portland boy who is accused of trying to rob a woman with a loaded pistol.
Portland police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson says a search warrant was issued Tuesday and Joseph Charlton was taken into custody. The 34-year-old is the first person to be arrested under a city ordinance prohibiting adults from leaving unsecured firearms where minors can access them.
Police say two boys -- the 11-year-old who had the gun and a 7-year-old -- tried to carjack a woman Saturday in a church parking lot. The woman drove away and was not injured.
The 11-year-old has been taken into protective custody along with Charlton's other children -- a 4-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy.
The mother has not been charged.
