Idaho’s Suicide Hotline launches
After a long wait, Idaho became the 50th state to have its own suicide hotline.
The Idaho Suicide Prevention Hotline launched on Monday, staffed with volunteers who hope to prevent a tragedy that’s all too common for some Idaho families.
Just last month, 400 Idahoans called a suicide hotline number. Those calls were routed to another state.
Now callers will be talking to people who understand Idahoans and know what kinds of long-term services are available in the area.
"Almost everywhere I go...they'll say my fill-in-the-blank died from suicide - my family member, my partner, my loved one. It's overwhelming," said executive director John Reusser.
The Gem State has one of the highest suicide rates in the nation.
1-800-273-TALK is staffed Monday through Thursday, 9 AM to 5 PM.
