Couple adopts on National Adoption Day
It’s National Adoption Day.
There are some incredibly happy families in the Treasure Valley tonight.
Happy and grateful because they are proud new adoptive parents
What an incredibly emotional day. Today's Six On Your Side got rare permission to shoot video in the state supreme court and witness a very touching adoption.
At the Idaho State Supreme Court Friday it was a special day for families
“You're prepared to sign the agreement of adoption? Yes,” answers adoptive father David Fitzgerald.
David and Toni Fitzgerald are adopting his granddaughter, Danyka.
“She's my granddaughter”, says Fitzgerald.
His daughter, Danyka's birth mother, is not in the picture for now.
But Toni has been there from the beginning.
“She's always been mine, from the day she was born. I saw her the day she was born in the hospital and she's always been mine. And I love her with all my heart,” said Toni Fitzgerald.
This is a day the Fitzgerald family has looked forward to for a long time.
“Oh yeah. It's the culmination of over a year of, oh it could happen this way, or it could happen this way,” said Toni Fitzgerald.
An incredibly emotional day for them.
Even though this hearing was mostly a formality, it is also the final legal hurdle.
“That's the best part, because it’s signed, sealed and delivered. Right there. Marching orders,” said David Fitzgerald.
“When it finally does comes it's like. Oh!! Finally!!! We finally are there. So, it's been an emotional roller coaster for sure,” said Toni.
Adopting isn't something these two planned on doing.
But today they walked inside a building a couple.
And came out a family.
