Idaho couple to stand trial for fundraising fraud for falsely claiming cancer and pregnancy
BUHL, Idaho (AP) -- An Idaho couple will stand trial separately on grand theft charges after prosecutors say they fabricated stories about illness and pregnancy to collect thousands.
Fifty-six-year-old Michael Wayne Holley is scheduled to be tried Dec. 26, while 44-year-old Lisa Dawn Holley goes before a jury Jan. 15.
The Twin Falls Times-News reports they claimed their daughter was being treated for cancer.
What's more, their church in Buhl was told that she was pregnant with triplets and needed financial help.
But they were arrested in August at a planned car wash and raffle after undercover detectives offered the couple $1,200.
That's because Twin Falls prosecutors say the daughter doesn't have cancer and was previously removed from her parents' custody.
They also contend Holley wasn't pregnant.
The Holleys have pleaded not guilty.
