Animals unharmed after pickup crashes into zoo

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) -- Officials with an eastern Idaho zoo say Shu Shu and Zasu the camels are OK after a pickup truck came crashing into their enclosure.

Tautphaus Zoo Superintendent Beth Rich says the animals were unharmed in the Wednesday night crash because they'd been taken inside their barn for a feeding.

Idaho Falls Police Sgt. Phil Grimes says 19-year-old Nicholas Murua was charged with several misdemeanors, including leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving and resisting or obstructing law enforcement. Two minor boys who were passengers were also given misdemeanor citations including resisting or obstructing an officer and underage consumption of alcohol.

Rich says the zoo will have to replace about 100 feet of fencing and make other repairs. For now, the camels are being housed in a different enclosure.
