BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Authorities in eastern Idaho are searching for a grizzly bear with gunshot wounds after a run-in with hunters.

Idaho Fish and Game officials say the bear was shot Saturday by hunters trying to retrieve an elk in the woods in Fremont County. The hunters say they fired at least 12 shots at the grizzly after the bear charged. The bear then left the scene, but left a small blood trail.

Investigators have posted warning notices and have assigned officers to patrol and alert the public.

Fish and Game officials say the encounter shows guns may be effective at turning a charging bear, but firearms can also create lingering concerns if the bear is only wounded. They say bear spray remains the most effective because the impact is temporary.
