POTLATCH, Idaho (AP) -- The sound of gunshots from a Potlatch firing range may be bothering some in the rural north Idaho community, but to mayor Dave Brown, the ammunition plant's bustling activity carries the ring of job creation.

Brown told the Moscow-Pullman Daily News he was troubled to learn some residents who live near the PNW Arms facility have complained to Latah County officials.

County zoning commission took the noise and safety concerns seriously at a public hearing last week and they're now taking their time with the company's request for a second firing range.

Brown says PNW Arms is not only an ammunition manufacturer, but a potential source of jobs in the former timber town, where residents have struggled since the local mill closed more than 20 years ago.
