BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- An active duty airman at Mountain Home Air Force Base accidentally shot himself in the leg while disassembling a gun in a vehicle outside a relative's home in Elmore County.

The sheriff's office says a family member called 911 at 6:15 p.m. Sunday and the 19-year-old man was taken by air ambulance to a Boise hospital.

Deputy Ray Page tells Idaho Statesman the bullet did not appear to hit an artery and the injury was not believed to be life threatening.

Page says the man failed to unload the gun before disassembling it.
