Prosecutors: Woman charged in assault case unfit
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) -- Prosecutors have dropped an aggravated assault charge against an eastern Idaho woman because they say she is mentally unfit to stand trial.
Prosecutors filed the charge against 22-year-old Jennifer Denise Gonzalez after they said she threatened a police officer with a knife in December. But Bonneville County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Daniel Clark told the Post Register that a recent mental health evaluation determined Gonzalez was unfit for trial and most likely would always be unfit for trial. Clark said Gonzalez has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and other illnesses, and she has been a patient at State Hospital South in Blackfoot since January.
It's rare for a person to be declared permanently unfit for trial. Clark said most people are hospitalized, stabilized and later returned for sentencing.
