Hunter recalls run-in with grizzly bear in Idaho
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) -- A hunter who was bitten by a grizzly bear after surprising the animal in eastern Idaho says the attack happened in seconds.
Gary Detwiler, a 67-year-old archer from Midland, Mich., told the Post Register he was helping his hunting partner retrieve a bull elk carcass Friday when they encountered the bear, which may have already claimed the carcass.
Detwiler said the grizzly immediately jumped on him, biting his arm before returning to the trees.
The two men walked four miles back to their truck and drove to a medical clinic so Detwiler could get stitches. Detwiler says since then, he's remained in hunting camp as his friend has hunted.
State wildlife officials will search the area later to determine if the bear was guarding the carcass.
