CALDWELL, Idaho (AP) -- A 3-year-old boy who was playing in a creek near Caldwell drowned after being swept downstream and getting stuck under brush and debris.

Police in Caldwell say the boy, who was wearing a life jacket, was playing in Indian Creek with his mother and an older sibling Sunday afternoon when the current swept all three downstream. The mother and one of the children were washed clear of the tree, but the victim did not resurface.

Several bystanders tried unsuccessfully to locate the child.

Firefighters and officers and a heavy equipment operator worked for more than two hours to clear the debris and recover the child's body. His life jacket was still on. No one else was injured.
