Woman arrested for leaving the scene of an accident, DUI with kids in car
Wednesday night around 10:15 PM, Garden City Police were dispatched to an accident at Arney Lane and Wakefield Street.
While en route to the accident, they learned that vehicle responsible for causing the accident, a Blue Suzuki passenger car, had fled the scene. With the assistance of the victim, officers located and stopped the vehicle near Glenwood and Marigold Street.
The driver was identified as Jennifer Sorensen, 31 of Meridian. During the initial phases of the investigation, officers located two 4-year-old boys in Sorensen’s vehicle. Police removed the children because of smoke emitting from the vehicle caused by the damage from the accident.
During the investigation officers determined that Sorensen was operating her vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. After arresting Sorensen, officers also located a substance believed to be marijuana inside her purse and a marijuana smoking pipe on her person.
“Fortunately there were no injuries as a result of the accident. The boys, who appeared to be in good health, are currently in the custody of their father," Chief Bensley said. "This was an unnecessary event that could have resulted in a severe outcome. We are very grateful to the citizen who assisted us with locating Sorensen and preventing a potentially tragic outcome.”
Sorension was arrested on charges of Driving Under the Influence, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Two counts of Injury to a Child.
