Closed GOP primary spurs further protest, debate
BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Idaho's closed Republican primary continues to spur debate.
A local GOP official in Elmore County just east of Boise withdrew his party affiliation -- just hours after he'd won his second term as a Republican precinct committeeman on May 15.
The Idaho Statesman reports Geoff Schroeder made the move to protest the closed primary that allows only registered Republicans to vote in the party's primaries.
Some Elmore County GOP members wanted to remove Schroeder from his precinct post at a recent meeting.
Schroeder survived, however, after brandishing a letter from Idaho Attorney General Lawrence Wasden indicating the party had no power to boot him.
The county organization did censure him for "behavior unbecoming" of a party member.
Schroeder is satisfied that his protest drew attention to the closed-primary issue.
