U of I student drowns in N. Idaho
LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) -- An 18-year-old University of Idaho freshman has drowned in Dworshak Reservoir.
Authorities tell the Lewiston Tribune that Preston W. Vorhauer of Kamiah died Saturday afternoon trying to swim to a small island near the Freeman Creek Boat Launch during a fraternity camping trip.
Detective Mike Deitrick with the Clearwater County Sheriff's Office says about six Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity members were about two-thirds through the 150-yard swim to the island when Vorhauer yelled out he was turning back.
Deitrick says two other swimmers briefly kept Vorhauer afloat but were unable to hang on and he slipped under.
Authorities recovered the body using on-boat sonar at about 4 p.m. following a three-hour search.
Deitrick says authorities have no reason to believe the drowning was anything but accidental.
