SAMMAMISH, Wash. (AP) -- A King County sheriff's spokeswoman says a 7-year-old girl has died after accidentally strangling herself with a jump rope at a playground in Sammamish, Wash.

Sgt. Cindi West said the accident happened Tuesday evening. The girl, her 5-year-old brother and two caretakers were at the Samantha Smith Elementary School playground.

The spokeswoman says the little boy told deputies his sister had been playing with the jump rope around her neck.

The boy and the caretakers walked off to pick berries. They returned to find the girl face down on a slide with the rope wrapped around her neck.

West says the child died at a nearby hospital.

She says while the death appears accidental, the major crimes unit will investigate.

Sammamish is east of Seattle.
