Idaho couple arrested for cancer fundraiser fraud
BUHL, Idaho (AP) -- A south-central Idaho couple has been arrested for allegedly raising money for their daughter who they said has leukemia, when in fact the husband acknowledged they were trying to raise money for an attorney to regain custody of the 14-year-old girl.
The Times-News reports police in Buhl arrested Michael and Lisa Holley on Saturday at the site of a planned car wash and raffle fundraiser. Both are charged with grand theft by deception. Michael Holley's bail is $50,000 while his wife's is $5,000.
Police Chief Eric Foster says a neighbor who saw a newspaper story about the fundraiser told police the Holleys told her that they wanted to raise money to hire an attorney.
Court records say Michael Holley told police the money was going to help pay for an attorney.
