Wildfire in south-central Oregon called contained
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- After three weeks of battling it, firefighters say they've contained a large wildfire in south-central Oregon and northern California.
That means the crews on the Barry Point fire have established lines around the 145-square-mile burn area and are confident the flames can't get out.
The fire started southwest of Lakeview in a series of lightning strikes Aug. 6.
Firefighters say it's still smoldering and creeping in the ponderosa pine and juniper landscape, and it may burn on until rain and cool weather set in.
The U.S. Forest Service says road and other closures remain in effect while the crews continue work on the fire
The Barry Point blaze is one of five large fires burning in Oregon or along its borders.
