SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Authorities say a man serving life sentences for the 1998 murders of a ranch hand and his girlfriend may be responsible for at least two other cold-case deaths.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports Duchesne County Sheriff Travis Mitchell has submitted court records indicating his office is investigating John Pinder for the deaths of two women believed buried in a car somewhere on Pinder's Utah ranch.

Mitchell's status report was filed in U.S. District Court in response to a 2011 lawsuit filed by Pinder's parents seeking the return of dozens of firearms seized after the murders.

The weapons were seized from the Idaho home of Barbara DeHart's estranged husband. DeHart was Pinder's girlfriend at the time of the murders. Police say Pinder brought the firearms to Idaho after the murders.
