Former deputy sheriff sues Canyon County
BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- A former deputy sheriff for Canyon County claims he was forced to use vacation time when fulfilling his service obligations with the Idaho Army National Guard.
James E. Richards filed a federal lawsuit Friday against the county, saying officials docked his vacation time and other leave benefits when he was off the clock fulfilling his service duties. Richards worked for the county between February 2008 and May 2012.
The Idaho Statesman reports federal law says employers can deduct service hours from vacation benefits if the employee requests it. Richards claims the county deducted about 190 hours of his paid time off while he fulfilled his service duties, and more than 25 other employees had a similar experience.
He is seeking class action status.
County officials declined to comment.
