Nampa school district facing $2.8M shortfall because of budgeting error
NAMPA, Idaho (AP) -- A school district in southwestern Idaho says budgeting errors spanning over the past two years have resulted in a $2.8 million shortfall.
Nampa School District officials disclosed the budget gap Tuesday, less than a week before the next academic year starts.
Deputy Superintendent Joshua Jensen says significant budgeting errors -- including the counting of some revenue twice -- led the district to spend more money than it had. Jensen says the mistakes weren't caught because administrative staffers have been handling more duties due to previous budget cuts.
The district says no one's getting fired, but they will have to leave vacant positions unfilled, reallocate some federal funds and reduce money available for the hiring of substitute teachers, transportation and supplies. Officials have also hired an accountant to prevent future problems.
