WA retired nuns home evacuated as brush fire nears
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) -- A Spokane, Wash., fire official says a brush fire prompted the evacuation of about 60 people from a convent that houses retired nuns who need assisted living services.
The Spokesman-Review reports the fire burned within about 100 yards of the Convent of the Holy Names on Monday afternoon.
Fire Chief Bobby Williams says the evacuation was orderly. No injuries were reported in the fire.
Buses and ambulances were used to evacuate employees and 36 nuns; some were in wheelchairs and others were confined to their beds.
Between 75 and 100 firefighters responded to the blaze. Williams said several crews would work through the night to completely extinguish the fire.
The cause was under investigation.
