Firefighters pulled back from fire outside Stanley
BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Firefighters were pulled back from a small but dangerous wildfire burning northwest of Stanley in central Idaho, where several campgrounds have been evacuated.
The 60-acre blaze in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness has also prompted the closure of Forest Service roads and a boy scout camp north of Idaho Highway 21.
Authorities say deemed the blaze too dangerous to fight from the ground Monday and firefighters were withdrawn. Crews continued dumping water from above while also clearing possible fire fuels along Beaver Creek Road in an effort to contain the blaze.
Mardi Rhodes with the Salmon-Challis National Forest says the number of fallen and dead trees in the area made it unsafe for firefighters. Rhodes says officials won't decide whether to resume ground efforts until Tuesday.
