Officials release name of pilot killed in N. Idaho plane crash
48-year old Coeur d'Alene resident Jahan Ashtiani was killed in a small plane crash yesterday.
Thursday around 4:30 p.m. the Idaho County Sheriff's Dispatch Center was advised by U.S. Forest Service of a fatal small plane crash at the Moose Creek Airstrip approximately 32 miles east of Lowell.
Ashtiani, the pilot, and Anthony DiPaola, 49 of Evergreen, Colorado, had flown from Coeur d'Alene into the Moose Creek area on a fishing trip. A thunderstorm was moving into the area and they attempted to leave prior to its arrival. During takeoff a gust of wind caught the plane and flipped it over. Ashtiani died in the crash and DiPaola suffered minor injuries.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash.
