Family of slain U of I student files claim against school
The Idaho Statesman reports the family of slain University of Idaho student Katy Benoit has filed a $3-million dollar claim against the school.
Professor Ernesto Bustamante shot Benoit on the doorsteps of her apartment last August.
The Benoit's family file a tort claim at the beginning of December, it's the first step toward suing the university.
The statesman's Patrick Orr says the filing also sheds light on some new details in the case as well.
"There is kind of a newer allegation that he had sexual relations with several students and in the tort claim it says: absuive and coercive sexual relationships including orgies," Orr said. So, I'm not sure what that means, but we'll probably find out as the lawsuit goes ahead."
After Benoit's murder the university released thousands of documents related to the case. And made its policy on student-faculty relationships more stringent. The university has also submitted its policies and procedures to review by an independent panel.
