Idaho schools vie to receive laptops first in 2013
BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- The state Department of Education says most schools districts want to be first in line when Idaho starts phasing in laptops for students in 9th through 12th grades.
On Thursday, the agency reported 73 districts and charter schools have said they want to be included in the first group to receive the devices next year. Idaho is phasing in the laptops under new education changes that will also require students to take online classes.
The state will introduce the laptops this fall, starting with high school teachers.
Idaho was going to start with 9th graders when phasing in laptops for students in September 2013. But a task force created to help implement the changes recommended a different route, saying the computers should be deployed in schools one-third at a time.
