A Garden City man has been arrested by police after being accused of stealing a cell phone from a victim and being chased down by a group of citizens.

On April 7th, 2016 at approximately 9:30 PM, Garden City Police responded to a call of a disturbance in the area of east 48th Street and Adams Street.

When officers arrived, they came into contact with a group of people who were apparently chasing a Hispanic man.

Officers detained several people and discovered that the man who was being chased had attempted to steal a cell phone from a woman near East 43rd and the Boise River Greenbelt.

When the suspect grabbed the phone, the woman screamed, and several people responded to help the victim.

The suspect, identified as Juan Jose Gutierrez-Hernandez, 25, fled on foot while the citizens chased him.

“This was a great example of good citizens coming to the aid of a person in need and stopping a crime in progress. Garden City Officers take pride in the community we serve and we greatly appreciate the close working relationship we have with our community. We would not have made this arrest without the help of our community,” Lt. Tom Patterson said.

Gutierrez-Hernandez was taken into Ada County Jail and charged with felony robbery.
