POCATELLO, Idaho (AP) -- A Pocatello firefighter narrowly escaped injury when the floor he was crawling along in a burning duplex collapsed.

The Idaho State Journal reports that the firefighter noticed the floor start to buckle and quickly moved away before it gave way.

The collapse left a 5-foot by 5-foot hole on the first floor of the duplex off West Lewis Street.

The fire was reported around 10:30 p.m. Friday by a neighbor who spotted smoke pouring out of one of the units. Fire officials say if the firefighter had fallen through the floor and into the burning basement, he likely would have been injured or worse. The firefighter's name wasn't released.

The flames were extinguished in about 25 minutes. Firefighters were still on the scene early Saturday investigating the cause.
